Piran
Today was another optional day. Our group is now down to 21 people and everyone opted to join the excursion. We left at 8:30 and drove to Piran, which is still in Slovenia but on the Adriatic Sea. Slovenia only has 47 km of shoreline. Over the years there have been many battles between countries to lay claim to the peninsula of Istria. Now this area is divided up between Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.
We arrived in Piran at 10:15 and were met by our guide, Damian. Piran is a small peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea. It is the southernmost point of Slovenia. From Piran you can see Croatia and Italy.
It is a picturesque seaside town and it felt very relaxed. We had a warm, sunny day. 😎
In the central square there were school kids working on assignments, tourists riding in on bikes and people sitting in cafes and enjoying the weather.
We visited the Monastery of St Francis and then walked up to St. George’s church for a view over the red roofed town, the sea and the 3 countries. Then we wound through tiny alleys to see the former Jewish Ghetto. We ended our guided tour along the seaside promenade at noon.
We had free time to have lunch and enjoy the beautiful seaside town. Some people shopped, some went for a swim whiles others just strolled the promenade. All too soon it was time to regroup and head back to Ljubljana.
Our trip back to Ljubljana took longer than planned because it was Friday afternoon and the roads were very busy
We arrived back in Ljubljana at 4:20. At 6:00 most of us regrouped downtown for a drink. It was a beautiful evening to sit beside the river. Lots of people were out and about. It was a great end to a wonderful day!
