Lake Bled
Just when I thought this trip couldn’t get more amazing, we had today!! We left at 9:00, in the fog again, saying goodbye to Ljubljana. About 15 minutes down the road, the fog lifted and we got to see Triglav, the peak of Slovenia. Every Slovenian needs to climb this mountain to prove they are truly Slovenian.
We drove though an agriculture area, where the main crops are corn, wheat, apples and potatoes. We had some lovely views of the Alps.
After an hour we drove through Bled and got a glimpse of where we would be returning to. We continued on to Bohinj where there is a lake in a beautiful wilderness area. Since it was higher up in the mountains, it was cool (10 degrees) and foggy.
We toured inside the Church of St John the Baptist, built in the 13th century. It was very unique and interesting as it contained frescoes depicting the beheading of St John the Baptist, as well as some rather unique frescoes of angels with scary teeth and goiters.
The fog burned off and we walked along the lake where we got to watch paragliders soaring above and landing right in front of us. We had free time until noon so it was a lovely opportunity to just walk along the lake and soak up the beauty.
Then we drove back to Bled and went to Bled Castle that is high up, overlooking the lake. We saw a replica of the Gutenberg press and he gave us a demonstration and explanation .
We walked up to the top of the castle and visited the Chapel and museum. We had wonderful views of Lake Bled and the island from there.
We drove to our hotel at 2:00 and checked in. We had to say goodbye to Steve, our wonderful bus driver, as he had to return to Croatia.
We had the remainder of the day to do as we pleased. Most of us treated ourselves to a piece of the famous Bled Cream Cake. It was delicious!! Also, most of our group did the 6 km hike around Lake Bled. It was a sunny, calm day, a beautiful day for a walk around the lake. I’m sure that just in our group alone there were several hundred pictures taken!
We are staying at a wellness hotel with a beautiful pool and spa. I doubt that many of us will have enough time to take full advantage of this beautiful hotel.
Several of us ate dinner at a restaurant called “The Old Cellar” which really is located in the bottom of a small hotel. It is divided up into many rooms. The food was amazing!
We have one final day of adventure ahead of us as we are heading to the Alps tomorrow! Stay tuned!
