Split
We were happy to have a bit of a sleep in as we only left at 9:00 for our Split city tour.
Our first stop was at the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery. The Gallery is located beside the sea and it offers stunning views. Mestrovic was Croatia’s most modern and prominent sculptor. His works rivalled those of Michaelangelo. Our guide, Matteo, was very good at explaining the meaning behind each sculpture.
From the Gallery we went to the Old Town. We toured Diocletian’s Palace that dates back to the 3rd century. Inside the palace there was an art display by Neno Mikluvic, which made the tour even more interesting. Then we walked through the old town to see the various monuments influenced by Gothic and Renaissance periods as well as Venice and Egypt.
We finished our guided tour at noon and we had two hours of free time to have lunch, shop and explore. We ended our tour at the Riva, which is the waterfront area in the Split Harbor. The Harbor is filled with fishing boats, sailboats and elegant yachts. It is a wonderful place to sit, soak up the sun and people watch. It is lined with restaurants that offer a beautiful view!
Some people chose to remain in the Old Town while the rest of us got on our bus to go back to the hotel. Our hotel is located across from the beach so many of us got into our bathing suits and went for a swim in the Adriatic Sea. Heavenly! After putting in 3 very hectic but wonderful days It felt great to have a relaxing afternoon!
We regrouped at 6:30 and boarded the bus to go four dinner. We are at a great restaurant that was designed for groups and we were treated to three gentlemen playing instruments and singing. We enjoyed singing along to many popular songs like “Sweet Caroline” and “Country Roads”. Then the band performed a special song for Bernadette and Barry’s 50th anniversary. It was a very festive evening. We topped off the celebration by singing “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” on the bus. I believe that a good time was had by all!
