A Day in Dubrovnik

 We began our day with an 8:15 orientation meeting meeting.  Our Tour Director, Tamara, is very vibrant and thorough.  

At 10:00 we departed on our city tour with our local guide, Nikolina.  First we travelled by bus outside of the city on a very narrow road, up along the coast to a viewpoint where we had a breathtaking view of Dubrovnik. Then we travelled down to the old city of Dubrovnik and disembarked to begin our walking tour. There were two cruise ships in port so the old town was very busy!

We visited the Franciscan Monastery, admiring the beautiful artwork and architecture. Then we wound our way through the streets to the Rectors Palace.  

We wrapped up at 1:30 and had the afternoon free. We split up into small groups.  Markhams and Hardings bought a picnic lunch and rode the cable car up to the top of the mountain for a beautiful panoramic view.  Some of the others walked half of the city wall and then returned to the hotel to spend time by the swimming pool. 14 of us went for a quick sandwich to maximize our free time. Then we headed up to walk along the wall that surrounds the Old City, a distance of two kilometres with many steps up and down. It was a lovely, rather warm day and we had breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and the old town. By the time we finished we were ready for a cold beer!  We again wound our way through the crowds to find a little door that leads to the Buza Bar. Somewhere along the way we lost track of Carl, Juanita and Audrey. We felt that there was no chance of going back through the crowds to find them so we continued on to the bar.  Much to our delight, we found them waiting for us at the entrance!  Obviously they had found a faster way, even though they were behind us! 🤣 

This little bar sits on the rocks on the outside of the wall, allowing an incredible view of the Sea. While we enjoyed a cold beer, Juanita went for a swim!  She was the brave (and smart) one!

As we were running short on time, we had to quickly make our way back through the crowds to catch the local bus. We rode the public bus back to the hotel, arriving at 5:00 pm. We ran to our rooms, quickly changed our clothes and left again at 5:20. 

We rode back to old city on our tour  bus and we got dropped off at the marina.  We got on a boat and went for a lovely cruise, getting to see the old city from the sea. 

Then we went to an open air restaurant along the sea shore for a lovely meal and to watch the sun go down.  After dinner we took the boat back to the marina and then walked through the old town to see it at night.  It was a

beautiful evening!

We arrived back to the hotel at 9:00 pm. It was a long but wonderful day and we were ready for bed!

Today was another optional excursion which everyone chose to take. Our driver, Goran and our guide, Robert picked us up at the hotel in a smaller bus.   We travelled to Triglav National Park , the only National Park in Slovenia.    Robert played Slovenian music by the Arsenik brothers to set the mood! Triglav means 3 and this mountain has 3 peaks and is    2864 m high. We drove over the highest pass, Vedic pass, which is 1610 meters high and has 50 hairpin curves! Eek!    This highway was built during WW1 to provide access over the mountains.  We stopped at a Chapel dedicated to the Russian prisoners killed in avalanches in 1914.   The war in 1991 that gave Slovenia their independence from Yugoslavia only lasted 10 days and it ended on June 25, 1991.  We stopped at an open air museum which still has original WW1 Tunnels that we were able to walk through.  We stopped in the village of Bovec for lunch. Trogir and Zadar

  It was another early morning as we had to leave at 8:00 am. It was time to SPLIT!  🤣 . We drove a short distance to Trogir which is on the  UNESCO World Heritage List  as it is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.  Encased in 15th-century walls, the tiny medieval streets wind through the enchanting town revealing hidden restaurants and eye-catching galleries. A wide seaside promenade snakes around the town, culminating in a charming port full of sailboats.   Tamara led us on a short walking tour and then we had 1.5 hours of free time.  We continued to drive along the coast with beautiful vistas around every corner. We Made it to Dubrovnik!

 We all made it safely to Dubrovnik! We had four people fly in two days early to explore Dubrovnik.  Today we had four people fly in from Edmonton, two from Toronto, 15 from Saskatoon  and Carl and I flew in from Vancouver. By 4:00 pm, we had all arrived and were greeted by tour Tour Director, Tamara. We had a bit of time to get settled and showered before regrouping for our welcome drink.  This was our first meeting together as a group as we’re weren’t able to have a Predeparture meeting (that’s what happens when the Group Coordinator moves to Kelowna)! 🤷‍♀️ After sharing a drink and making introductions we headed to the dining room for dinner.  We were treated to an amazing variety of delicious food. It didn’t take a lot of convincing to get people to head to bed.  We are all tired, ready for a good nights’ sleep and a great day tomorrow.    Good night!
